Navigating Career Uncertainty in Big Tech: How to Develop a Strategy During Times of Change
Published: February 17, 2025
The world of Big Tech is undergoing significant shifts—this is one of the most significant tide changes I’ve witnessed in my career. With an increasing number of layoffs and rising uncertainty in the industry, it’s understandable that many professionals are feeling anxious about their careers. Whether you're experiencing this firsthand or just wondering what’s next, it's crucial to remember that you’re not alone. These changes, while unsettling, also present an opportunity for growth and strategic pivoting.
Performance-Based Layoffs and RTO Policies -one of the most surprising developments has been the shift toward performance-based layoffs at companies like Meta. Traditionally, layoffs in tech have been tied to broader cost-cutting measures or restructuring efforts, but the recent cuts signal a change in how performance metrics are being used to make staffing decisions.
Additionally, many big tech companies have become less flexible, implementing return-to-office (RTO) mandates and reversing the remote work policies that were once considered a major perk of the industry. Some employees who resisted RTO policies have found themselves facing career uncertainty as companies begin enforcing stricter in-office requirements. Major companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple, and Meta have all mandated RTO policies, signaling a shift in workplace expectations. This shift has further fueled anxiety among professionals who had adapted to remote work and built their lives around that flexibility.
1. Acknowledge the Anxiety & Take Control
The first step is to acknowledge how you’re feeling. Career anxiety is completely normal during times of uncertainty, especially when change is happening rapidly. Think about it – things were very different even just back in June – this has shifted VERY quickly. This anxiety can serve as a signal that it's time to reassess and re-evaluate your career path.
While you may not be able to control market conditions or corporate decisions, you can control your next steps. Take the time to reflect on your goals, values, and what you want from your next role—whether within your current organization or elsewhere. Ask yourself:
What skills do I bring to the table?
How can I pivot into a role that aligns with my long-term vision?
What are my non-negotiables in terms of work-life balance, compensation, and culture?
2. Keep Performance Up & Stay Prepared
If you are currently in a stable position, ensure that you are meeting all performance metrics and documenting your contributions. Keeping a record of accomplishments, feedback, and key projects can be invaluable in case of leadership changes or unexpected shifts within your company. Staying proactive in managing your career stability will help position you for long-term success.
3. Assess the Market & Identify Opportunities
Evaluate industry trends and emerging opportunities. Research which companies are hiring, what skills are in demand, and whether your expertise aligns with shifting market needs. Keeping an eye on external opportunities ensures that you’re prepared to act quickly should your circumstances change.
4. Align Career with Life Goals & Work with a Coach
During times of transition, it's important to remember your broader life goals. Does your current career trajectory align with your personal values? Sometimes, a shift in perspective can lead to surprising and fulfilling career paths that you may have never considered. Ask yourself:
What’s most important to me in my career?
How do I want to make an impact?
Creating a strategy in isolation can feel overwhelming. Working with a Career Coach can provide the clarity, focus, and accountability needed to move forward. A coach can help you craft a personalized strategy, refine your approach, and ensure you’re not just surviving—you’re thriving.
